Hebrew Letter Samekh

This letter has the meaning of shield, as thorn bushes were used by shepherds to build a wall or shield, to protect and enclose the flock from predators.   Thorns also “grab hold” and adhere to things.

The root word of Samekh is #5564 sa-mak  סָמַךְ meaning to lean, lay, rest, support, put, uphold, lean upon. It is the verb that is used in the phrase “laying on of hands.” An example of this is seen in Deut. 34:9 when Moses laid his hands on Joshua. To lay hands on someone is a form of consecration, yet it also has the idea of supporting.

When we lay hands on someone it imparts a spiritual anointing and support.  The spiritual support also needs to be followed by physical support.

The Sages see the circular form of the samekh as the heart of God, which upholds and supports us. Just like a circle that has no beginning or end, neither does God. This is seen in Psalm 37:17/54:4. The Messiah is our shield Psalm 3:3/18:2 and Romans 11:18.  According to the sages, the samekh represents the ever-ascending spiral of God’s glory in the universe. This divine structure is revealed in Creation with the rhythm of the seasons and His appointed times.

The samekh also resembles a wedding band. This ring symbolizes a couple’s commitment to each other.  During a Jewish wedding ceremony, the bride will circle around him seven times under the chuppah (wedding canopy). This symbolizes her uncompromising support of her husband.
